Review: Closer by The Chainsmokers ft. Halsey

I know it breaks your heart / Moved to the city in a broke-down car  and / 4 years, no call / Now I’m looking pretty in a hotel bar and / I can’t stop / No, I can’t stop…
Halsey, “Closer”

The Chainsmokers (Alex Pall and Drew Taggart) have done it again with their latest single, “Closer,” featuring Halsey.

Drew sings on this track, and it’s really refreshing. He has a low tone, which is the perfect juxtaposition for Halsey’s voice.

Anyone who’s heard Halsey’s debut album, Badlands, knows she has serious vocals. A little smoky and a little soulful, they’re perfect for the story “Closer” is telling. The track plays like a journal entry that will take your thoughts right back to the first person you fell in love with.

At least, that’s how I interpreted it. The Chainsmokers described the background of the song. It’s a little…intense.

“We wanted to make a cool song about something that’s super relatable but do it in a clever way. The songs about f–king your ex-girlfriend and then after remembering all the reasons why you hate that person,” they told

The electronic beat is bouncy and dynamic, much like The Chainsmokers’ past production. One thing’s for sure–this is going to be a lot of fun to experience live.

The “Closer” lyric video could easily be the official music video, playing out a relationship on the screen as the lyrics overlay the snippets of their time together.
